Catching Peacock Bass with Capt. Brett

You are here: Home / Fishing Reports / Catching Peacock Bass with Capt. Brett

By Joseph LoBianco

I had a really interesting trip in the canals of South Florida recently. We went Peacock bass fishing. The Peacocks, Mayan, Oscar and Midas cichlids have all been introduced to the waterways there by aquarium owners that could no longer keep up with these South American fish. The Peacocks grow into the 8- 10 lb range and are aggressive feeders and extremely territorial when on the beds.

Normally, top water is the ticket but when they are bedding, clousers in bright colors really excite the bedding fish. You can make repeated casts into the nesting area and work it until you catch one, normally the male and then cast right back in and work the female out. They only stay on the beds for 9 days but they are always bedding throughout the year so someone is home at all times. It is site fishing for the most part and a lot of fun. If you are in the Miami/Ft Lauderdale area, there is a guide down there name Brett Isackson with Bass On Line.

Hope to see you soon and I am trying to work a trip to Bristol in for late June or July. See you soon.

Capt. Brett, I wanted to thank you for a great day on the lagoons and canals. I caught three first fish; Mayans, Peacocks and Midas Cichlids. With Larry’s Oscar, we took the South American slam. If you are ever in the Atlanta area and want to hit the Hooch, let me know. I will gladly take you to a couple of my favorite spots.
